Dobbs on double for youths
Wexford FC man Aaron Dobbs chipped in with two goals as Ireland's U19s warmed up for their Euro qualifiers with a win in Romania.
Tom Mohan's side take on host nation Portugal, Slovakia and Kosovo next month in the Elite round of qualification, the winners of that group advancing to the U19 finals in Finland, and Mohan used two games in Romania to prepare.
And they followed up an earlier 1-0 win with a 2-1 victory yesterday, Enniscorthy lad Dobbs with both goals as Falkirk's Ciaran Dunne claimed two assists.
"This week was all about forming a squad for the Elite Round, and putting together the strongest squad possible. These players have shown the strength of the squad, and some players have put themselves in very strong positions," said Mohan.
"It's been a good couple of days. The team did very well today, and followed up Tuesday's performance with a very good performance.
"We had two or three good chances in the first half but didn't take them. When the chances arose in the second half, Aaron Dobbs put them away."
Meanwhile, in Galway the Ireland U17s were held to a 0-0 draw by Turkey in a friendly. Belvedere product Troy Parrott was closest to breaking the deadlock only to be denied by the Turkish crossbar.
The U17 side are also preparing for Elite round qualifiers next month.
"We got exactly what we wanted from it. Turkey will always give you a battle and they were two very testing games. It gave us an opportunity to look at some new players that came into the squad," said coach Colin O'Brien.
"We are in a good place ahead of the games next month."
