Croly wields axe on nine Rovers stars

SHAMROCK ROVERS have launched a major clear-out with nine senior players axed by manager Trevor Croly.

Despite winning two trophies, the 2013 season was a disppointment for the Hoops, who finished fifth in the league and failed to qualify for Europe, and boss Croly has reacted by wielding the axe.

James Chambers, Billy Dennehy, David Elebert, Danny Ledwith, Conor McCormack, Ken Oman, Conor Powell, Stephen Rice (right) and Tommy Stewart have all been released ahead of the 2014 campaign.

"Manager Trevor Croly has spoken to each player in recent days. The club would like to thank the nine players for their service to the club and wish them the very best for the future," the club said in a statement today.

Rovers have started planning for next season as Luke Byrne (Bohemians) and Conor Kenna (St Pat's) have been signed up.

Bohemians have made their first signing for the new season as keeper Lee Murphy has joined from Shelbourne.

AJAX FINED €25K FOR CELTIC BANNER

Ajax have been fined €25,000 by UEFA after fans displayed an offensive banner at their Champions League home game against Celtic.

The Dutch club announced the sanction on their website and confirmed another case is ongoing concerning crowd trouble at the return fixture in Glasgow.

The banner carried a sectarian message and appeared in the same area of the ground as flags pertaining to the 'F-Side' hooligan group of Ajax fans.
