Counsel hits four as Griffith Rovers claim AFL treble capturing the Jim Byrne Cup
GRIFFITH ROVERS................... 6 GREENHILLS......................... 2
ANOTHER REMARKABLE treble was completed on Wednesday evening when Griffith Rovers added The Jim Byrne cup to the Clifford and senior division league title.
The East Finglas lads went unbeaten all season absolutely amazing! As was the case in a couple of our finals this year, the final result didn’t do the vanquished any favours. In fact, Damien Smith recons that Luke McMahon the Griffith ‘keeper pushed goal-scoring hero Mick Counsel close for the man-of-thematch.
When Counsel came off the bench the game was in the balance, Griffith just edging matters at 2-1. The substitute banged in four goals as Griffith ran away with it in the second half. They did so without injured skipper Declan Geoghegan, who went to collect the trophy with Keith Bruen, the only man with more medals than ‘my brother Sylvest.’ Keith Donnelly and Noel Ankers were the other scorers in a game that topped an astonishing season for Rovers and their managers John Ennis and Paul Malone. The club would like to thank sponsors ‘Ladbrokes’ and Tolka Rovers for the use of their facilities during this red letter season. And great credit to Greenhills also, they proved worthy opponents in the main and 6-2 was harsh on them.
