Clifford's out to make cut in Blades trial

IRELAND prospect Conor Clifford's time at Chelsea appears to be at an end as the U21 cap has begun a trial with League One side Sheffield United, writes AIDAN FITZMAURICE.

Clifford has been at Stamford Bridge for four years but has so far been unable to make the first team and with his contract expiring at the end of this season, it appears that his deal will not be renewed and he will be on the move.

And this week Clifford is on trial with the Blades with a view to a long-term move, appearing for the reserves in a 2-0 defeat to Crewe.

Clifford is established at U21 level, winning 13 caps, and has also featured in the senior Ireland squad, as an unused sub on four occasions under Giovanni Trapattoni, but has struggled at club level and made just one sub appearance during a loan spell at League One Crawley Town earlier this season.
