chelsea on the double

JOSE Mourinho and Chelsea pulled off a major coup on a quiet transfer deadline day by landing effectively landing £23milion-rated Colombia star Juan Cuadrado for just £1m.

Chelsea managed to push through the sale of German international Andre Schurrle (left) to Wolfsburg for a reported fee of £22m, on the same day as they signed Cuadrado (right) from Fiorentina for £23m, a bargain for the London club.

"This is a great club and it is like a dream to join the Chelsea family and to know that the manager believes in me. I'm happy," said Cuadrado, one of the stars at the 2014 World Cup for Colombia.

He had been linked with Manchester United and Real Madrid following an impressive spell in Italy with Fiorentina but Mourinho will be pleased with his day's work.

Three Irish players sealed moves late last night, with Cork-born Anthony O'Connor leaving Blackburn Rovers for Plymouth and U21 cap Conor Wilkinson joining Oldham on loan from Bolton, while Michael Duffy finalised his move to Celtic from Derry City.

"Michael Duffy has passed his medical and has agreed personal terms to sign for Celtic FC. Everyone at Derry City FC would like to wish Michael every success," Derry said in a statement last night.
