Cardiff wait on fitness of star McPhail
CARDIFF CITY will give their Irish skipper Stephen McPhail until the last minute to prove his fitness ahead of Sunday's Carling Cup final against Liverpool.
Dubliner McPhail (pictured) has emerged as a major doubt after he suffered a recurrence of Sjorgen's Syndrome earlier this month and he could miss the Wembley showdown with Liverpool, which would leave current U21 cap Joe Mason as the only Irishman involved on the day at Wembley.
"It's touch and go for Stephen," said Cardiff boss Malky Mackay. "We will give him until Saturday to see if he is going to be involved or not. He will have a fitness test in London tomorrow and hopefully he'll come through.
"We haven't had him recently so it is something we have become used to coping with.
"But, playing against a Premiership outfit in a final, I obviously want my full squad fit and available and he's an experienced guy."
Gibson Czechs out of friendly
GIOVANNI Trapattoni has revised his plans for next week's friendly against the Czech Republic as Everton's Darron Gibson has pulled out of the tie.
Gibson picked up a knee injury which is now being assessed by Everton's medical staff, but the Derry-born player has no chance of being fit for the Czech game.
Shane Duffy, his Everton team-mate, was also a doubt with an ankle injury but he resumed training with the Toffees yesterday and he hopes to be fit enough to link up with the squad in Dublin on Sunday.
