BRENDAN Rodgers has jumped to Steven Gerrard's defence and warned his critics to be careful what they wish for in advance of Liverpool's tough Champions League away assignment against Basel tonight.

Gerrard's ageing legs have been called into question in recent weeks and Liverpool seem to be hedging on offering him a new deal but Rodgers has no doubts about his skipper's importance to Liverpool.

"He is right at the thick of it, he is right at the centre of it, that is the position I have put him in so that he can orchestrate the team. That is something he has done magnificently and the players respond to that.

"He will play and prepare himself right the way through to the very end. When that is, we will see," said Rodgers.

"Some of the criticism he's had shows the level he's been playing at consistently. That teams deem that they need to put someone on him as a marker shows the influence of his game."

"The players look at how calm Stevie is and they know he has been at the level before and gone right the way through and won the tournament.

"They can draw inspiration from that. He is calm, whether it is a Champions League game or a league game. His focus is very much the same."
