Bayern ease through to knock-outs

bAYERN MUNICH won Group E with two games to spare following their 2-0 win over Roma at the Allianz Arena last night.

Franck Ribery and Mario Goetze claimed the all-important goals to put the Germans through.

In Group F, a Lionel Messi double gave Barcelona a 2-0 win over Ajax in Amsterdam to also book their place in the next round of the competition.

They will now dispute top spot in the group with Paris St Germain who have a one point advantage over Barcelona following their 1-0 victory over APOEL Nicosia. Edinson Cavani's second minute strike was enough to send Laurent Blanc's side into the second round.

FC Porto claimed their place in the second round with a 2-0 win at Athletic Bilbao. Jackson Martinez made the breakthrough on 56 minutes and Yacine Brahimi doubled their lead in the 73rd minute to put the Portuguese side through.

Shakhtar Donetsk, meanwhile, enjoyed a 5-0 win over Belorussian rivals BATE Borisov at the Donbass Arena to lie two points behind Porto in Group H. Sporting Lisbon beat Schalke 04 4-2 to move above their German rivals in Group G. Sporting fell behind courtesy of an Islam Slimani own goal in the 17th minute but got back on level terms in the 26th minute through Naby Sarr.

Jefferson put Sporting ahead on 52 minutes and Manchester United loanee Nani made it 3-1 but Schalke pulled a goal back through Dennis Aogo. Slimani then got Sporting's fourth in the 90th minute.
