Battle is on for Whelan
Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers and Charlton Athletic are competing for the right to sign Glenn Whelan.
The 35-year-old is a free agent after he was released by Aston Villa at the end of last season but Whelan is in demand.
His former club Stoke City are still being linked with Whelan but Blackburn and newly-promoted Charlton are leading the queue of clubs eager to sign Whelan.
Teams in Greece and Turkey have made inquiries about the Dubliner but he has been told by Mick McCarthy that he is more likely to extend his international career if he stays close to the UK and a Championship move is likely.
"When I spoke to the Ireland manager, it was about playing as high as I can," Whelan said last month.
"So for me to go to a different league, which is probably not as competitive as the Premier League or the Championship, I think my options would be limited to come back into the international stuff."
