Arsenal move is no help to given

ARSENAL have failed in a second attempt to sign Mark Schwarzer but continue to pursue the Fulham goalkeeper -- and that's bad news for Shay Given.

Arsene Wenger remains eager to sign an experienced goalkeeper to replace Manuel Almunia, but was again rebuffed by Fulham, even after a transfer request was lodged by the Australian international.

Schwarzer is 38 in two months' time and Arsenal have so far refused to shift from a £2m valuation, about £1m below Fulham's asking price, but are expected to make an improved offer next week.

Given's options remain poor. A loan deal at Craven Cottage looks like his best choice or failing that, a return to Parkhead and a season with Celtic.

Joe Hart kept a clean sheet in Manchester City's 1-0 Europa League win over Timisoara last night, cementing his place as Roberto Mancini's No 1.
