ASTON VILLA'S new boss Paul Lambert has told Shay Given that he going to have to fight for the number one spot in the Villa side under his reign.
The 36-year-old endured a tough time at Euro 2012 with Ireland conceding nine goals in their three group games and news that his previous performances at Villa Park won't guarantee him a starting berth will come as a surprise.
Lambert re-signed American Brad Guzan when he took over and expects him to push Given for a place in the starting line-up.
"At the start of the season nobody knows what is going to happen and it depends on whoever does well," he said.
"I watched Brad in some of the games when he was in the team last year and he was excellent.
"I know he's always had the stigma of being number two behind some really good keepers here.
"Brad played very well the time he was in and maybe he found himself a little unlucky to be back out.
"The club needs two or three good keepers so when Shay comes back after the Euros it will be a big bonus and we'll see what happens."
United close in on Baines
Manchester United are closing in on a deal to land Everton full-back Leighton Baines for around £14m.
Baines is viewed by Alex Ferguson as a long-term replacement for the ageing Patrice Evra and hopes the the set-piece specialist signs a new deal by the end of the week.
David Moyes is relluctant to sell the 27 year old but knows that the Toffees will be unable to turn down that kind of money.
United will be hoping to secure his signature in time for their summer tour of South Africa and China next week.
