Hockey: Leinster Boys Senior Cup: Wes' Cullen finally brings Andrew's reign to an end
Dylan Cullen’s second-half goal saw Wesley win back the Leinster Schoolboys Senior Cup title at Grange Road on Monday, denying their arch rivals St Andrew’s a perfect season.
The Booterstown outfit had previously won the All-Ireland championships in October as well as the Whiteside Trophy and the Leinster league but the final part of a famous quartet of titles proved tantalisingly out of reach.
Wesley kept things tight for most of the final with Daragh Walsh playing a key role in midfield while Leo Micklem was superb in goal for the Ballinteer school. Wesley soaked up plenty of pressure before mounting a late series of attacks from which Cullen struck in the last four minutes to snatch victory.
Andrew’s best chance came in the first half when they were awarded a penalty stroke for a deliberate back stick in the circle but the effort from the spot clattered off the bar to safety.
It was Wesley’s ninth title and first since 2011, ending Andrew’s three year reign in the competition while this particular team had been on an incredible 45-match winning run.
The school had won the last 13 trophies on offer at senior level since Wes won the 2011 cup.
