Diepman double-jobs to save Alexandra a semi-final place
Hockey: Girls Senior Cup
PIA DIEPMAN made an incredible four saves in a penalty shoot-out to propel Alexandra College into the Leinster Schoolgirls Senior Cup, setting up a date with surprise package Loreto on the Green.
Even more impressive was that she is not the recognised goalkeeper and only swapped in for the shoot-out after their tie with Mount Anville had ended scoreless after extra-time.
Alex had the best of normal time and put Mount Anville’s back four, marshalled by Suzanne Kelly, under a lot of pressure and created great chances for Sophie Roopnarinesingh and Ava Beatty (inset). Both saw efforts saved while a Katherine Egan corner rebound was also kept out. At the far end, Sophie Gleeson had to clear a spinning ball off the line after Ruth Cullen’s initial save. The second half saw Mount Anville enjoy greater possession with Claudia Cotter winning a couple of corners while Isabel Delamar completed one save by volleying a clearance off the line.
Extra-time could not produce a winner either, leading to penalties where Diepman was swapped into goals and duly performed heroics while Louise McCollum and Freya McDermott netted to see them through.
