Higgins heroics drive Dhúlaigh

COLáISTE DHULAIGH won the Perpetual Minor Shield thanks to a hat-trick from captain Courtney Higgins and a dogged performance during yesterday’s 3-2 win over holders Larkin Community College at the VEC Girls Soccer Finals.

Tied at 2-2, Higgins beat her marker wide on the left wing before unleashing an |unstoppable left-footed drive beyond Larkin’s goalkeeper Jennifer Corrigan to seal a |remarkable comeback.

Vicky County gave Larkin an early lead before Higgins, who took home the Player of the Tournament award, opened her account to tie the score 1-1 at half-time. Dhúlaigh fell behind for the second time when Larkin’s captain and playmaker Emma Mullen found the net.

Higgins, Louise Field and Emily Garrigan then combined well, with Higgins slotting home a second equaliser before sealing a momentous win for the Northside college with her wonder strike in a pulsating game, held at Coláiste íde, Finglas.

Bounced

Larkin bounced back in the Junior Shield final, with their captain Shauna Mitchell scoring four goals in a comprehensive 5-2 win over Coláiste Dhúlaigh.

First-half goals from Dhúlaigh’s Aisling Brady and Mitchell’s opener left the game tied 1-1 at half-time.

Mitchell went on to claim her hat-trick immediately after the restart with two excellent strikes. Dhúlaigh then pulled a goal back through captain Carly Bollard.

However, Larkin hit their opponents with two goals inside a minute from Player of the Tournament Mitchell and Nikita Murtaigh, with Leah Halpin, Naomi Rock, Lauren O’Driscoll and Hayley Duffy also playing a considerable part in their success.

Larkin also retained the Perpetual |Intermediate Cup with a comprehensive 8-1 win over Coláiste Eoin. Larkin’s Katie Gaffney and team captain Kirsty Hogan both shared the match ball with a hat-trick apiece, while Jade Murphy bagged a brace.

Kelly Gerathy scored Eoin’s consolation goal, with Larkin’s Gugu Banda named Player of the Tournament.
