Gaelic Football: Salesian serve up warning to all-comers on national run-in

Salesian College, Celbridge 4-10 Coláiste Choilm, Tullamore 1-7

Colm Smyth scored two goals as Salesian College of Celbridge comfortably beat Tullamore's Coláiste Choilm to lift the Leinster Senior 'B' title last Friday at St Conleth's Park.

Salesian hit three goals in the opening half and were full value for this convincing win over their outclassed opponents and in this kind of form they will be a match for any team in the semi-final.

Despite the backing of a vociferous crowd and registering the opening point, Coláiste Choilm struggled from the outset and once Dylan Corcoran found the net for the Kildare side after just three minutes, Salesian never looked back.

AWARDED

Playing in their home county, Salesian already had a lead of four points when they were awarded a penalty on 12 minutes after Corcoran was barged over inside the square by Ciaran Sheridan.

Corcoran limped out of the game after that challenge but Coláiste Choilm were made to pay the full price when Smyth converted from the spot.

Smyth scored his second goal of the game three minutes before the half-time break when he timed his run into the square to perfection and punched Patrick Brophy's high ball into the net. That left Salesian leading by 11 points at half time and the Offaly boys staring into an abyss.

PEDAL

With the game more or less over as a contest, Salesian took their foot off the pedal a little at the start of the second half, but it was obvious that Coláiste Choilm had decided to go for goals from an early stage and they spurned a number of easy points in favour of the more difficult option to shoot for a green flag.

All they had to show for their best period of play were points from Martin Holleran and Stephen Keogh before Fergal Conway's 44th-minute goal reasserted Salesian dominance.

Conway followed his goal with three points on the trot and even Holleran's late consolation goal couldn't take the shine off a very polished victory for Salesian who now progress to the All-Ireland semi-final.
