Basketball: Templeogue shock Fintan's

Certain scores define games, even a season, and that was certainly the case at the Firhouse Community Centre on Friday as Templeogue College pulled off a fantastic victory against the mighty St Fintan's.

Victory had looked a long way away for the Dublin 6 outfit earlier on, with the excellent shooting of Conor McCracken (with Gary Barron offering good assistance) propelling Fintan's into a 17-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

But Templeogue got themselves right back into contention with Aidan Rooney (Templeogue) and Dylan Kessie (Fintan's) trading baskets in what turning out to be a terrific scoring duel.

And the final minute of the first half was to ultimately shape this game, with Kessie dropping in a tremendous three-pointer.

But then came that score when, in what was the final play of the half, Rooney drained an unbelievable shot from the outside to make it game on once more: 21-19 at the break to Jerome Westbrooks's boys.

Fintan's shaded the third quarter 6-4, with the big three of Barron, McCracken and Kessie prominent.

And, despite some terrific link-up play in the final quarter between McCracken and Kessie, Templeogue came to the fore with the excellent Sean Flood lighting up the court with a tremendous display in the number six jersey.

And with David Nolan making some vital interceptions, crucial baskets from Flood, Cian McKeown and Daniel Murphy (two frees) had Templeogue right on Fintan's coattails before Rooney landed the killer basket to send the southsiders through to the decider where they will take on Presentation Bray at the Oblate Hall in Inchicore tomorrow (tip-off 12.30pm).
