LEINSTER coach Joe Schmidt is due to sit down for a chat with Luke Fitzgerald this week about "the whys and wherefores" of his future.

"We have put a contract offer to Luke and we are hopeful that he will opt to take it," Schmidt said on Saturday evening.

This comes as the rumour mill turns over with speculation that Fitzgerald has been a target of Munster, at least before he ruptured his ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) as a replacement for Ireland against Italy in the Six Nations.

"I haven't really had a massive chance to talk to him.

"I have had one chat with him because he hasn't been in camp because he is recuperating ahead of surgery for his ACL," said Schmidt.

"Hopefully, he will be with us next year. He is a good player that we'd love to hold on to."
