St Michael's can't chop 'Wood
The Kildare schools Clongowes Wood and Newbridge elbowed St Michael's and St Andrew's aside in the first two Leinster Senior Cup quarter-finals.
Brian O'Meara's St Michael's, the long-standing favourites, ended their journey with a final five-minute onslaught that just could not break Clongowes steel resolve in a thriller at Donnybrook on Sunday.
The Ailesbury Road school's sheepish 19-14 first round victory over St Mary's was seen as a wake-up call. So it proved.
They were physically right there with their gargantuan pack of forwards holding much possession without the penetration to match it.
There was an undeniable rhythm to Clongowes work with flanker Will Connors and hooker Jonny Moloney setting the tone for their no-nonsense approach at the set-piece.
The difference was in how Clongowes took the chances they made through centre Colm Mulcahy's hard line and wing James Lappin's smart finish in the 56th minute that gave them the will to survive.
