Smal to stay on as Irish coach

Ireland's forwards coach Gert Smal has put to bed the rumours of his consideration for the post of head coach to South Africa, writes DES BERRY.

"I was deeply honoured to be linked to the position of head coach for the Springbok team and, having being involved with the team before, it was obviously something that I would have thought about very carefully," Smal said in an IRFU statement.

Smal put pen to paper on an extension to his Ireland contract last July, which will keep him employed by the IRFU to the end of the 2012-2013 season.

"(Ireland head coach) Declan (Kidney) and the IRFU showed great faith in bringing me here and it has been a wonderful experience from a professional point of view, as well as for my family," Smal added.
