Macken at double for Leinster 'A'

BRENDAN MACKEN put his hand up for senior selection after his superb brace of tries inspired Leinster 'A' to a 21-9 victory over Pontypridd at Donnybrook in the British & Irish Cup.

Macken struck either side of half-time to give Leinster a 12-point cushion they never looked like relinquishing, with the rest of the points coming from Noel Reid's boot.

"This is huge for these players," said Academy chief Girvan Dempsey. "We were disappointed the way it worked out last year, losing the semi-final to Munster in extra-time.

"We're keen to go at least one better this season."

To guarantee their spot in the knockout phase, Leinster must defeat Leeds Carnegie in their final pool game.
