Howley parks penalty to break Gorey hearts

First-time contenders Gorey Community College came within three minutes of the Leinster Schools Vinnie Murray Senior Cup second round only for Newpark Comprehensive's Fergal Howley to strike the winning penalty in a titanic 18-17 struggle that saw the lead change hands five times at Greystones RFC yesterday.

Gorey will have to make do with a first appearance in the McMullen Senior Cup final, possibly next week, against St Conleth's College.

On this form, they will be raging favourites to take the title.

Sandford Park came out on the right side of a 29-24 cracker against De La Salle Churchtown, scrum-half Sean Fahey spotting a gap on the blindside which he took in the blink of an eye in the 67th minute.

There was no such drama at North Kildare RFC where Newbridge College wing Phil O'Neill struck for four tries in a bloodless 55-3 defeat of Wilson's Hospital.

Skerries got off to a bright start against St Andrew's when their captain Niall Collins grounded in the 10th minute.

However, the Booterstown boys took over from there to register a 19-5 victory, through tries by number eight Nathan Felton, scrum-half Daniel Joyce and flanker Killian McCarthy.
