Gorey girls blitz rivals
MORE THAN 100 young female players met up in the glorious sunshine at Wicklow RFC last weekend for the second meet in a four blitz league competition. With teams of girls across all age grades, U15, U17 and U9, there was plenty of great rugby played -- and fun had -- by all teams at the event.
There was much excitement among the Leinster clubs to play against visitors Virginia, and their U15 and U7s played very well in every round of the competition but lost to Clane's strong U17 squad in the last match.
Cill Dara brought some fresh talent into Leinster youth rugby with their brand new U15 team coached by women's captain Mel Morey. The girls quickly got into the swing of playing on a full pitch and were hungry for more matches after their first ever run out against Naas RFC.
The relatively inexperienced squad of 25 players from Naas, playing in their third ever match, did extremely well beating Cill Dara but then lost to Virginia U15s in the last round.
As always, Wicklow had great numbers and strong players on the park. However, despite winning the February blitz in Wexford, they didn't quite come out on top this time and the girls from Gorey snatched the medals home to Co Wexford by winning all of their three matches.
The next Leinster Youth blitz will be held at Gorey RFC on March 27, with the final competition day to be held in Clane RFC on April 17.
