Clontarf give Mary's a mauling in Metro Cup

In the 98FM Metro Cup, holders and league winners St Mary's went down 31-29 in a classic last Monday night in Clontarf.

Clontarf had stormed into a 21-7 half-time lead and led 31-12 midway through the second half, before a grandstand finish by Mary's just fell short when a conversion to draw the game and secure extra-time slid wide.

'Tarf advance to the second round to face Wanderers.

The other tie of the campaign so far was Belvedere's 36-35 win over Collidge last Sunday.

As a result, the three quarter-final matches this weekend are Bective Rangers v Old Belvedere, Greystones v NUIM Barnhall and Coolmine v Dublin University.

Lansdowne await the winners of the outstanding second-round match between Clontarf and Wanderers.

In the J2 O'Connell Cup there's a similar scenario, with Lansdowne, Mary's and Belvo all still involved, along with surprise package Malahide. Mary's easily put away Old Wesley last Saturday, Belvo took Stillorgan, Lansdowne were pushed all the way by Guinness, while Malahide saw off Coolmine.

The semi-finals take place tomorrow afternoon, with Mary's and Belvo on in Kirwan Park, and Lansdowne and Malahide meeting in Coolmine.

At J3 Moran Cup level, the quarters went as you might have predicted. Terenure went northside and pulled off an excellent away win in a cracking 26--22 win over Mary's, Lansdowne beat Blackrock, Mary's squeezed past Trinity and Belvo finally defeated Malahide.

So the semi-final pairings for tonight are: Old Belvedere v Terenure College and St Mary's College v Lansdowne.

In the Winters Cup last week, I predicted the tie of the round to be Terenure v Marys, and so it proved as the 'Nure lads shaded it 29-27.

Lansdowne were comfortable winners over Railway, while CYM defeated the Terenure 'B' team and now face Clontarf in the quarters.

Metro Plate 1st Round (Sunday, 3pm): Old Wesley v St Marys College; Garda v Monkstown; Blackrock College v Suttonians.
