PROMISING

JOHN Giles has urged Giovanni Trapattoni to rip up the script and make some radical changes to his team when Ireland take on Serbia in a World Cup 2014 warm-up in August.

James McCarthy, Wes Hoolohan, Marc Wilson, James McClean, Seamus Coleman and Ciaran Clark should all be fast-tracked into the starting line-up.

And the Evening Herald columnist believes that Roy Hodgson is living proof that it won't take as long as Trapattoni thinks to try something new.

"I know Trapattoni believes in his system and has suggested that there might not be enough time to change things," says Giles.

"But Hodgson has had no time at all to get things right with England and he's not doing too badly, is he?" he says.

"Paulo Bento, the Portuguese coach is another who was dropped in at the deep end but turned Portugal around very quickly.

"It's not about systems for me. It's about letting players play and I think there's a batch of very promising lads out there now and they deserve a chance to show what they can do."
