Seaward tops the 10-mile list
A welcome addition to the Irish rankings lists is a 10-mile list compiled by John Walshe, who for many years was the race director of the late and legendary Ballycotton '10'.
Noting that such a list didn't exist, Walshe decided to compile his own rankings for the past year, chasing down results of Athletics Ireland registered athletes in races held both in Ireland and further afield.
Topping the men's list of 75 times is Cardiff-based Kevin Seaward with a time of 48 minutes 41 seconds run in Portsmouth last October.
Hiko Tonosa of Dundrum South Dublin, is ranked second for his 49:10 recorded last April in Duhallow. In the same race, Sergiu Ciobanu of Clonliffe Harriers ran a time of 49:13 and is third on the list.
A time of 49:19 at the Frank Duffy '10' in September sees Stephen Scullion of Clonliffe Harriers ranked fourth, ahead of Raheny's Mick Clohisey with a time of 49:22 run in Cobh last April and Kevin Maunsell of Clonmel who ran 49:27 in Dungarvan last February.
The only other athlete to break 50 minutes for the distance was David Flynn of Clonliffe Harriers who clocked 49:47 in Dungarvan.
Heading the women's list is DSD AC's Laura Shaughnessy with her 56:47 run in Dungarvan last February. Maria McCambridge, also DSD AC, is ranked second for her time of 57:47 in Trim, also in February.
Third is Siobhan O'Doherty of Borrisokane AC who ran 57:59 in Dungarvan. Leevale's Lizzie Lee is ranked fourth with 58:28 in Cobh, with Jill Hodgins, also Leevale, lies fifth on the list with a time of 59:20 in Mallow. The full list is at www.corkathletics.org.
