Paul's weather Clement's storm to push through to 'B' showpiece

St Paul's College Raheny 51, St Clement's 41

A sterling third-quarter display from St Paul's saw them claim a fantastic victory over St Clement's at the IWA last Friday.

Clement's seemed to have had the measure of the Raheny boys early on and had a considerable height advantage under the baskets, particularly with Alan Shanahan.

Shanahan did some considerable damage along with Kristan Burchardt on the inside and with Paul's struggling to make their outside shots, it looked as if victory would elude Conor Gordon's side.

However, Paul's were a transformed team after the break as their two big-game players, Paddy Sullivan and Alex Taipau, transformed the tie after the break.

Clement's had edged the first quarter 8-7 with Shanahan converting two from the line. And they began to open out an lead early in the second quarter as they caught Paul's on the fast break.

And with a minute to go in the half, Clement's had opened up a seven-point lead.

But then right on the buzzer, Paul's captain Shane McMahon landed a three-pointer to leave the northsiders trailing by just two points at the interval, 21-19.

Clement's were to hit back with a big outside shot from Jamie McAuliffe but Paul's then began to dominate.

Drove

And after Greg Campion had driven to the line to convert two from two, a terrific solo from Sullivan was to edge Paul's in front for the first time, 29-28.

With Taipau registering back-to-back baskets, Paul's then hit Clement's for another score when Sullivan scored off the third rebound.

That was to help Paul's into a 39-35 lead at the end of the third with two quick baskets from Sullivan and Greg Campion forcing Clement's to take a time-out.

However, there was to no comeback and Paul's wound down the clock with scores from Sullivan, Taipau and Givens.
