Niland repeats the trick in Sarajevo to bag brace over Ihlan
A WEEK after beating Turkish player Marsel Ihlan in the Davis Cup match at Fitzwilliam, Conor Niland did it again at the Sarajevo Challenger in Bosnia Herzegovina, where Ihlan was second seed.
The 28-year-old Limerick man dropped the first set but pulled back the second, winning 6-3, and went on to take the match in a third set tie-break.
In the next round, a tired Niland went out in straight sets to German player Tobias Kamke.
Lazare Kukhalashvili of Georgia, who trains at the national tennis centre in DCU, made it through to the main draw of the Great Britain F4 Futures, which started earlier this week in Bath.
After receiving a bye into the second round of the qualifiers, the 19-year-old beat British players Simon Konov and Tom Farquharson to make it through.
He went out 5-7, 3-6 in the first round of the main draw after a spirited display against Briton Daniel Cox.
Also in the main draw, James McGee lost 3-6, 3-6 to British player Josh Goodall, while Barry King did well to take the opening set off No6 seed Henri Kontinen from Finland before losing 6-2, 4-6, 3-6.
Elsewhere, Barry Fagan made it into the second round of the single's qualifiers at the Albufeira Future 3 in Portugal.
He beat Portuguese player Andre Silva in the first round before going out to Morgan Mannarino from France.
In Pretoria, David McKenna lost to local player Dudley Smith in the first round of the South Africa 2 junior tournament.
A few days earlier, McKenna, ranked 692, made the second round of the South Africa 1 junior tournament.
