Niland breaks into top 200 Kelly tips Millar to stay pretty in pink Pregnant Radcliffe set for NY fun run
TENNIS: Conor Niland has created a piece of tennis history by becoming the first Irish-born player to achieve a place in the top 200 of the world rankings -- in either men's or women's tennis.
Niland rocketed up from his previous career-high position of 222 to 165, after netting 100 ranking points for winning the Israel Open title at the weekend.
Two players who represented Ireland, Matt Doyle and Kelly Liggan, peaked at 65 and 181 in 1982 and 2003. But Doyle was born in California, while Liggan, whose father hails from Dublin, was born in Spain.
Niland now takes over the Irish No1 position from his Davis Cup team-mate Louk Sorensen.
Meanwhile, world No 1 Roger Federer began the defence of his Madrid Masters crown with a 6-2 7-6 dismissal of Benjamin Becker in the second round.
Olazabal abandons return to Euro Tour
GOLF: Jose Maria Olazabal was back on the European Tour today for the first time since last October -- but just for one day.
Bedevilled by problems with rheumatism, the double Masters champion has decided he is only fit for the pro-am on the eve of the Tour's visit to Majorca.
His manager, Sergio Gomez, said: "He does not feel good enough to play several days in succession. He does not have the strength or the will for that."
Kelly tips Millar to stay pretty in pink
Cycling: David Millar was expected to land the Giro d'Italia's pink jersey today according to Irish cycling legend Sean Kelly.
"Millar is in a really good position at the moment," said Kelly. "With the team they've got (Team Garmin-Transitions) for the team time-trial, he will definitely be looking to take the pink jersey. I think he has a great chance of doing that."
