Mitchell best with Armagh sixth
Emma Mitchell of Queen's University, with a sixth-place finish in the women's 3km, produced the best local performance at the Brooks International Road Races in Armagh.
The event attracted a large entry of club athletes from the UK and Mitchell's time of nine minutes 19 seconds left her 20 seconds behind winner Laura Weightman of Morpeth Harriers.
Fionnuala Ross, of host club Armagh AC, was 12th in 9:28, followed by Kerry O'Flaherty of Newcastle AC who, despite a recent winter virus, finished 17th in 9:35.
National marathon champion Laura Graham of Mourne Runners was 23rd in 9.47, one place ahead of Una Britton of Slí Cualann.
In the W45 category, Ashling Smith of Slí Cualann had a notable win over the experienced Cathy McCourt.
In all, 132 finished the race with Leeds City the first team home.
Matt Bergin of DSD, and also Bedford County, was best of the Irish in a closely-contested men's race, finishing 12th in 14:08.
Winner was Sam Stabler of Wreake and Soar Valley in 13:59.
Donore's John Travers was 17th in 14:16, followed by Brian Maher of KCH 23rd and Hugh Armstrong 32nd
Also lining out were steeplechaser Tomas Cotter of Dunleer AC, junior Darragh McElhinney of Bantry AC and Seán Hehir of Rathfarnham WSAF.
All but two of the 208 finishers came home in under 17 minutes and Swansea Harriers proved best of the 11 teams entered all from the UK.
