McIlroy backs Ryder change Golden Germans Venus knee injury

GOLF: Rory McIlroy and Lee Westwood have joined the call for a new date to be found for the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy has gone from calling the match "just an exhibition" to "the greatest event in golf by far" -- and believes it deserves a better place in the schedule.

"It would be great to have it at the end of August or start of September -- because the weather is a bit better," he said.

Westwood, who needs a top-two finish at the Dunhill Links Championship this weekend to dethrone Tiger Woods as world number one, said: "The Ryder Cup is so prestigious and such a big event that priority should be given to it with regard to dates."

McLaren eye win

F1: McLaren's managing director has vowed the team will pull out all the stops in their pursuit of a performance advantage over their rivals in Japan this weekend.

Jonathan Neale says the team are running at the "lean edge" of development as they bid to turn around a slump relative to Ferrari and Red Bull, adding: "I hope the upgrades make a difference."

Golden Germans

EQUESTRIAN: The German show-jumping team earned gold at the World Equestrian Games.

Germany finished as the runaway winner with just 17.8 cumulative faults after three days of jumping. France finished second with 24.32 faults and Belgium was third with 24.7.

Meanwhile, Irish rider Anthony Condon won the Tri-Zone Senior Newcomers Championships on day one of the Horse of the Year Show in Birmingham, clocking 36.45 seconds on Molly Malone V.

O'Bee lifetime ban

CYCLING: American cyclist Kirk O'Bee, a former teammate of Lance Armstrong, received a lifetime ban and had his competitive results since 2005 erased after a second doping offence, the US Anti-Doping Agency announced yesterday.

O'Bee, whose 2007 US national championship will be wiped from the record books as part of the suspension, was banned for his use of EPO and human growth hormone (hGH).

Venus knee injury

TENNIS: A nagging knee injury has forced Venus Williams to skip the rest of the season, including next month's Fed Cup final between the USA and Italy.

BASEBALL: The New York Yankees came back from a 3-0 deficit to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-4 in the opener of their best-of-five American League Division Series.

MLB: Minnesota 4 NY Yankees 6 (NY lead best-of-five series 1-0), Tampa Bay 1 Texas 5 (Texas lead best-of-five series 1-0), Philadelphia 4 Cincinnati 0 (Philadelphia lead series 1-0).
