McIlroy back on form at Quail Hollow
Rory McIlroy made a n encouraging return to action following his latest disappointment at the Masters as he struck hit a three-under par 68 in his opening round at the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday afternoon.
The Holywood golfer is aiming for a hat-trick of wins at Quail Hollow having claimed titles there in 2010 and 2015 - the first of which was also McIlroy's maiden PGA Tour victory eight years ago
Among the early starters, McIlroy wasted little time reacquainting himself with the venue, as he struck a birdie on the par four second hole when he pitched to within 10 feet from 138 yards and stroked home with the minimum of fuss.
He gave up that shot on the par-three sixth, however but immediately got back under par on the next - the first of three birdies on par fives for the Northern Irishman.
A further birdie on the 12th had seen McIlroy get to four-under heading to the last and despiting finishing with a disappointing bogey, he remains well in the hunt.
The same couldn't be said of Shane Lowry, who hit five bogeys in his opening round of 74, with the Offaly man needing a big round to avoid the cut tonight.
