Mayweather to step up to Cotto

BOXING: Floyd Mayweather will go back up in weight to challenge Miguel Cotto for his WBA light-middleweight title on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, his promoters have confirmed.

The fight ends immediate hopes of Mayweather facing Manny Pacquiao, although there are still hopes that that fight may be made in autumn.

Doherty suffers whitewash

SNOOKER: Mark Williams routed Ken Doherty 5-0 as he began the defence of his German Masters title in fine fashion in Berlin.

Williams piled up breaks of 50, 51 and 107 in the lop-sided victory over Doherty, who had earlier beaten Germany's Patrick Einsle 5-1 in the wild-card round.

"Ken's a tough opponent so to beat someone of his calibre is even better," said Williams.

Shaun Murphy edged out Barry Hawkins 5-4 with a break of 82 in the deciding frame.

Ricky Walden beat Martin Gould 5-1, Stephen Lee won 5-2 over Adrian Gunnell and Scottish potter Stephen Maguire trounced Wales' Ryan Day 5-1.

Amir out of jail

Cricket: Pakistan cricketer Mohammad Amir has been released from jail after serving half of a six-month sentence for his part in a fixing scam.

Amir, 19, was one of three Pakistan cricketers who received prison terms over the bowling of deliberate no-balls in the Lord's Test match with England in 2010.
