Martin hits deck in the Dauphine

CYCLING: Irishman Dan Martin suffered a crash in the eight-day Criterium Dauphine in Saint-Valliers yesterday, which put him out of overall contention, as Britain’s Bradley Wiggins (Sky) took over the yellow jersey of race leader.

Martin hit the deck along with Milan-San Remo winner Simon Gerrans (Orica GreenEdge) and Dutchman Pim Ligthart (Vaconsoleil) on a roundabout with around 30km of the stage to go, and was forced to give chase alone, ending the stage 16 minutes down.

Cadel Evans (BMC) won a sprint finish and his four-second advantage at the line propelled him into second on the general classification, just a single second behind Wiggins.

Ciobanu second in Cork

ATHLETICS: Clonliffe’s Sergiu Ciobanu ran two minutes faster than his winning time last year in yesterday’s Cork City Marathon but it wasn’t quick enough to beat Freddy Keron.

Kenyan Keron knocked over three minutes off the old Cork record, finishing in 2:22.12, with Ciobanu second in 2:22.55 and Huw Lobb (Serpentine) third in 2:28.37.

Angela McCann (Clonmel) retained the women’s title, coming home in 2:53.02, more than a minute clear of Donore’s Anne Curley (2:54.35) and Mary O’Leary (2:59.46). Clonliffe’s Gary O’Hanlon won the half-marathon in 1:09.15 and Lizzie Lee won the women’s race in 1:20.34, with Jerry Forde taking the wheelchair title.

Selfridge hits a double

GOLF: Moyola Park’s Chris Selfridge became the first player since Garth McGimpsey 24 years ago to complete the Irish Close-East of Ireland double when he beat Knock’s Nicky Grant after a dramatic three-hole aggregate play-off at County Louth.

Just eight days after lifting the Close title at Royal Portrush, the 20-year-old University of Toledo star got up and down from 122 yards for what proved to be a winning par-four at the third extra hole, the ninth, as 25-year-old Grant three-putted from long range after they had shared the first and second in regulation pars.

Warburton comeback

RUGBY: Wales flanker Sam Warburton has admitted he is having “withdrawal symptoms” after not playing for almost 11 weeks due to a nerve problem in his shoulder. But the grand slam skipper is set to be plunged back in at the deep end on Saturday at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, where he is expected to lead the northern hemisphere champions into action against the current holders of the Tri-Nations title.
