Madeley the late assassin
Strike seals latest crown for Wesley
Wesley College 3, St Andrew's College 2
Luke Madeley's winner four minutes from time continued Wesley's incredible run in the Leinster schoolboys' Senior 'A' league, making it 10 titles since 2000, as they edged out perennial rivals St Andrew's 3-2.
The Ballinteer side were deserving winners, never trailing and did most of the pushing as Andrew's felt the absence of star man David Cole.
The senior international panellist suffered a broken shoulder when the sides met in the newly inaugurated South of Ireland league with Andrew's winning out 4-0 that time.
They came up against a different Wesley force at Newpark, though. Ian Stewart had plenty still to do at the back post, but gave Wesley the lead in the 21st minute when he rolled home after good build-up work from Jonathan Lewis and Jack Perdue.
Lee Cole levelled within a minute with a deft reverse. One-on-one, Mark Wright did well in the first instance but was powerless to stop Cole who arrowed home from the edge.
But his side were behind at the half-time interval when Kiko von Eickstedt - a German exchange student - latched onto defensive indecision to slide home a loose ball on his backhand after Lewis again had powered into the circle. Again, Andrew's fought back with Fiachra Maher unmarked to roll home at the second attempt from Cole's crash ball.
But Wesley did all the attacking late on and were rewarded with a pair of penalty corners. Madeley's initial effort was saved by Jakim Bernsden but only back to his grateful stick and he thumped in a low winner.
St Columba's confirmed a second successive place in the All-Ireland Schoolboys' championships as Tom Gibbs got the only goal in their 'eliminator' with Sutton Park, joining Wesley and Andrew's at the showpiece event.
Sutton go into the qualifiers pool, which will take place in the new school year. The Senior 'B' final, meanwhile, was called off on compassionate grounds following the passing of a staff member in High School.
