King's Kyle crowned the best in West

ATHLETICS: With a number of new schools signing up, the Aviva West Leinster Schools Cross-Country Championships in Dublin's Phoenix Park attracted its largest entry.

Luttrelstown Community College was just one of the emerging schools to catch the eye, with star athlete Evan Panama (pictured) finishing a fighting third in the boys' junior race.

Just one place behind was George Mukete from Setanta Community College in Ongar -- another newly established college.

Ahead of them both, Jack Kyle of King's Hospital continued his recent winning streak after a fierce tussle with old rival Oisin Fitzgibbon from Salesian Celbridge.

Big brother Darragh, also Salesian, made it a family double when he won the boys' senior race, despite the close attention of Templeogue's Mitchel Ryan and Fintan Doherty of Castleknock College.

Also keeping it in the family were the Fitzpatrick sisters of Our Lady's Terenure. Eimear beat Rachel Dunne of St Colmcille's in the minor race, while big sister Sarah won the inter title when she sprinted away from Sarah Hawkshaw of Mount Sackville, reversing last year's result. With Aoibhinn Dowdall in third, Mount Sackville beat near neighbours Castleknock Community College for team honours.

St MacDara's dominated the girls' junior race, with team victory assured when Nadia Power and her schoolmate Carla Sweeney finished first and second. Mount Sackville had a second team victory in the senior girl's race, with Emily Milner of Maynooth Post-Primary the individual winner.

In the boys' inter race, the compact figure of Dylan Keegan from Templeogue College came home a comfortable winner ahead of Mustafa Nasser from Greenhills College. Salesian beat Belvedere for team victory, as they had done in the junior race. In the senior boys, Belvedere, with all four counters in the top 11, beat Templeogue College.

On the rolling hills of Rathdrum, pre-race favourite Kevin Dooney of CBC Monkstown beat Cillian ó Maonaigh of Coláiste Eoin to retain the East Leinster title.

Siofra Cléirigh-Buttner romped away with the girls' inter race, followed by her Coláiste íosagáin team-mate Sarah Ní Mhaolmhuire and Ella Fennelly of Mount Anville.

íosagáin took the team honours as they also did in the senior race, led by individual winner Clar Nic Chartaigh. Blackrock and its junior college, Willow Park, managed a clean sweep of all the boys' team categories.

The minor divisions were split into A and B races to ease the pressure.
