Kearns maps out victory

ORIENTEERING: Donal Kearns of Dunshaughlin Community College won the Irish second/third-year boys schools orienteering title in Woodstock, Co Waterford.

Kearns took 24 minutes 22 seconds to visit all 19 controls on the tricky 3.5km course.

More than two minutes behind him was John Cronin of Nagle Rice in Doneraile. Also running well on this course was Dylan Kennedy, who finished fifth and helped his school Rockbrook Park to third place in the team category.

On the 2.5km course for first-year boys, Ruairi Long of Rockbrook finished a minute behind winner Robert Pim of Newpark for second place.

Munster schools dominated the PJC 4.9km course for older pupils, with High School finishing fifth of the teams, followed by Rockbrook. A large squad from Mount Anville competed in the girls competitions, picking up team silver in the second/third-year competition. Leading the squad home were Jean McCarthy in fifth place, closely followed by Clodagh Penny and Elaine Joy McGillacuddy. St Mary's Mallow took the first four places in the competition.
