Keane has Rio in mind ahead as 'Hell of the West' looms

Bryan Keane (pictured), who is aiming to qualify for the Rio Olympics next year, leads an entry of 1,200 at today's 'Hell of the West' triathlon in Kilkee Co Clare.

The race starts with a 1500m swim in the Atlantic ocean. This is followed by 44km cycle along sections of the Wild Atlantic Way from Kilkee to Doonbeg with the south west wind adding to the difficulties.

Finally, there's an undulating 10km run that takes in Dunlickey hill on the outward trip.

Keane is using the race as preparation for the European Championships in Geneva in two weekstime. Taking him on is a strong field that includes Aichlinn O'Reilly from Westport TC, Rory Sexton of GoTri, and Commonwealth Games representative Harry Speers.

Defending the women's title she won last year is Carolyn Hayes of GoTri. Eimear Fitzmaurice of Base2Race leads the opposition.
