Injury rules Semenya out of Games in Delhi

ATHLETICS: Caster Semenya will not have the chance to add Commonwealth gold to the world title she won last year after being withdrawn from the Games due to a back injury.

South Africa's Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) announced last night that the 800m expert is not fit enough to compete in the Indian capital, Delhi.

Semenya, whose world title was overshadowed by a gender controversy, underwent scans in Johannesburg yesterday which confirmed her injury, a statement on SASCOC's website read.

The 19-year-old had shown good signs of improvement in her performances since returning from an 11-month track absence in mid-July.

De Villiers holds on to Boks job

Rugby: Peter de Villiers will remain as South Africa coach until at least the end of next year's World Cup in New Zealand, after a meeting with his employers in Johannesburg.

The under-fire Springboks boss had faced mounting criticism in the wake of a mediocre 2010 campaign in which the world champions lost five out of 10 Test matches. All those defeats came in the recently concluded Tri Nations where the team, who were defending their title, turned in their worst display in the competition's 15-year history.

Mageean makes Euro grade

ATHLETICS: Ciara Mageean, the 18-year-old Down middle-distance runner, has been voted into Europe's Top-10 Rising Stars for 2010. This is excellent recognition for Mageean and, in particular, for her brilliant silver medal win in the 1,500m at the World Junior Championships in Canada last July. She ran a lifetime best of 4:09.51, which is also an Irish junior record.
