Hogan reigns once again in sparkling Matchplay action

THE standards in pitch and putt continue to rise. The National Matchplay Championships at Collinstown proved that.

"The gents final was a classic," declared National PPUI PRO, Padraig O'Shea, who also saluted the electric exploits of the ladies.

Two Dubs made the quarter-finals -- Portmarnock's Ger Ward in the women's section and JR Crangle of Loughlinstown in the men's. Margaret Hogan of Tullamore took the ladies prize for the fourth time. "It was so tight between herself and Tara Dillon of St Bridget's. You could feel the tension," reflected Padraig.

The top gent was Deerpark's Damien Fleming, who also has the Irish Open title in his locker. In the Matchplay final he beat the holder, Chris Scannell, of Collins.

In the semi-final, Fleming defeated Stackallen's Patrick McBride, who had a marvellous tournament. He played some sparkling stuff. He wasn't alone.
