Gritty Glancy serves up epic

TENNIS: Daniel Glancy came within a whisker of causing a huge upset in the first round of the FBD Irish Open at the Fitzwilliam Club.

Up against Albano Olivetti, who had taken the massive scalp of world No 7 Mardy Fish in the top-tier Marseille Open just five months ago, the 23-year-old Mayo man was widely expected to be blown out of the water.

But instead Glancy turned in a gritty performance against the Frenchman before the No 2 seed was eventually able to clinch a second-round place, 6-3 7-6 (7/4).

The Castlebar native is world No 965, 673 places behind his 292-ranked opponent.

Defending champion James McGee, the No 3 seed and world No 356 from Castleknock, beat 736-ranked Mexican Manuel Sanchez 6-3 7-6 (7/1).

American team falling into place

RYDER CUP: The US Ryder Cup team is starting to take shape with three weeks remaining to get one of the eight automatic spots, and every shot is looking more important.

Brandt Snedeker, now in 11th place in the standings, lost precious points when he bogeyed the last hole and fell into a tie for third with Tiger Woods at the British Open.

The top eight going into the Canadian Open are Woods, Masters champion Bubba Watson, Jason Dufner, US Open champion Webb Simpson, Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson and Hunter Mahan.

PGA champion Keegan Bradley is at No 9, though he is the equivalent of $640,000 behind Mahan.

Each $1,000 in PGA Tour earnings is worth one point, and it's worth double that in the majors. The qualifying ends with the PGA Championship on August 12.

USA see off Spain ahead of London

OLYMPICS: Gold medal at stake or nothing at all, the US Olympic basketball team were too good for Spain.

Carmelo Anthony came off the bench to score 23 of his 27 points in the first half, and the Americans beat Spain 100-78 last night in a rematch of the gold-medal game -- and possible preview of the next.

LeBron James added 25 and Kevin Durant scored 13.
