Federer eases into quarters

TENNIS: Roger Federer waited until almost midnight to start his US Open fourth-round match yesterday, but made up for the delay with a brutal 6-1 6-2 6-0 win over Argentine Juan Monaco to reach the quarter-finals.

The five-time champion took the first set in 18 minutes and won the match in 82 minutes.

The 16-time major champion set up a clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who beat Mardy Fish in five sets earlier in the day.

Elsewhere, Caroline Wozniacki won a late-night thriller against former champion Svetlana Kuznetsova 6-7 7-5 6-1 to stay on track for a potential semi-final clash with Serena Williams.

Best: Irish must match US power

RUGBY: Rory Best has warned Ireland they must contain the USA's early onslaught in their World Cup opener on Sunday.

The Pool C clash falls on the same day as the 10th anniversary of the World Trade Centre attacks and Best believes Eddie O'Sullivan's side will feed off the emotion of the occasion.

"September 11 will be a momentous day for them. They'll be charged," Best said. "The first 10 minutes will reflect that and we must make sure we're able to match their physical intensity."

Pádraig's FedEx bid finally ends

GOLF: The FedEx Cup hopes of Pádraig Harrington were finally snuffed-out in Boston yesterday.

The Dubliner's effort to make the penultimate stage of the US PGA Tour's showpiece came to a miserable end at the Deutsche Bank Championship after a final round four-over 75 left him in 73rd place, 20 places shy of the field for The BMW in two weeks.

Poynter brothers to play Namibia

CRICKET: Andrew and Stuart Poynter will become the latest set of brothers to represent Ireland when they take the field against Namibia in a rearranged InterContinental Cup clash.

While older brother Andrew already has 32 caps, 20-year-old wicketkeeper Stuart missed out on a debut when Namibia, citing visa issues, failed to turn up for the original fixture in July.
