Eagles soar to scalp UCC

UL Eagles defied the odds to beat UCC Demons in a thrilling Men's SuperLeague National Cup final 72-65 at a sold-out National Basketball Arena last night.

American Robert Taylor was vital to his side's victory, although their opponents held the lead for a good bit of the contest.

Demons found themselves leading by five at half-time, 39-34, but Scott Kinevane got UL off to a flyer at the start of the third to reduce the deficit to three.

Neil Campbell stepped up moments later to bring Eagles to within one. Taylor brought the sides level soon afterwards as UL's charge gathered more pace, and Matt Hall managed to hit a superb shot on the buzzer to bring UL back to two shy (55-53) heading into the final quarter.

In a stirring last session, Eagles rounded it off in style through Hall to secure a memorable 72-65 victory.

In the women's decider, UL's incredible unbeaten record continued as they produced a superb display to beat DCU Mercy 64-27 to wrap up the 2012 Women's SuperLeague National Cup crown.

DCU were seeking three titles in a row but were left undone by a slick UL display, which saw Irish international Michelle Fahy named Most Valuable Player on the night.
