Contador confirms positive drug test

CYCLING: Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has revealed he tested positive for a banned steroid in this year's race.

The Spaniard gave a positive test for clenbuterol but says food contamination is "the only possible explanation".

A statement read: "From the time of the first communication from the (governing body) UCI, August 24, Alberto Contador alleged food contamination as the only possible explanation for what happened.

It continued: "The experts consulted have agreed this is a food contamination case, especially considering the number of tests passed by Alberto Contador during the Tour de France ... ruling out any other source or intentionality."

The UCI followed Contador's statement with its own, confirming the rider has been "formally and provisionally suspended".

Butt withdraws claim

CRICKET: Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Ijaz Butt has withdrawn his claims that England deliberately lost the third one-dayer against Pakistan earlier this month in return for money, and hopes a line can be drawn under the matter.

England lost the Oval match by 23 runs, but the PCB chairman, in London to meet English officials, said: "I wish personally, and on behalf of the PCB, to withdraw the comments I made."
