Britton breaks record in style
ATHLETICS: Fionnuala Briton started 2012 in winning style, chalking up a record-breaking victory in the Tommy Brennan Memorial 5km road-race in the Phoenix Park yesterday.
Britton's time of 16 minutes 15 seconds - which left her opponents floundering - knocked an impressive 24 seconds off the record she established in last year's runaway win. Raheny's Fiona Roche was second.
John Coghlan (Metro St Brigid's) clipped four seconds off the men's course record set five years ago by James Nolan.
Coghlan raced clear to win in 14:33 - 43 seconds ahead of up-and-coming 800m star Anthony Lieghio from Tallaght, with the 1996 Olympian Shane Healy a stride behind in third.
