O'Hara on fire as Blues are eclipsed

DUB STARS 2-18

DUBLIN 3-6

THE President-elect, Aileen Lawlor, was in the house. It was her first time back to St Brigid's in over 20 years.

The last occasion saw her leave the building in tears. It was the All-Ireland Junior Championship semi-final between Dublin and Tipperary.

"We were eight points up with a few minutes to go," she says. "Then Deirdre Hughes scored three quick goals for Tipp who won by a point. I was devastated.

"It was my last game for Dublin," recalled Aileen, who, with her three Redmond sisters, Yvonne, Ann and Barbara, played on Crumlin's All-Ireland-winning club championship team in 1985. Boggan's Belles silencing the fields of Athenry on Jimmy's beloved green, green grass of O'Toole Park.

Proud

Another figure of proud Crumlin stock, Denis Murphy, is into his second year managing the Dubs. "Between the two squads, we had 25 of our Dublin players that saw game-time, so from that point of view it was beneficial," remarked Denis. Admission to the third annual Dub Stars gig was free. There was even a free programme. A tidy crowd watched from the terrace.

The Dub Stars selectors got it right. They won! You always have a chance when Louise O'Hara is on the bus. She was her sparkling self.

Amy Murphy thrived at centre half-forward, and Muireann O'Gorman and Ali Towmey were at the dartboard over the Christmas.

Young Ciara Berkeley displayed her quality for Dublin, who led by 3-4 to 0-9 at the break, the goals coming from Aine Fanning, Berkeley and Aoife Bugler.

It was O'Hara's 44th-minute goal that tilted the score in favour of the Stars, 1-13 to 3-5. At that stage, the traffic was all flowing down towards the road end.

The Stars got sharper as the game progressed, and, from an O'Hara delivery, Aisling Carolan nudged in a second goal that underlined their growing dominance.
