Morland lights up Athlone indoors

Elizabeth Morland of Dunshaughlin CS proved the star of the Leinster schools Combined Events Championships in Athlone IT.

Competing at inter level, Morland dominated in all five disciplines.

She picked up 908 points for her time of 9.01 secs in the 60m hurdles and a further 806 points for her 1.66m high jump.

In the shot, a 11.62m effort won her 636 points while her 5.46 long jump was worth 688 points.

She finished it off with a comfortable 2:33.51 time for the 800m and a points total of 3688 - slightly off her best of 3740 from the schools international in Glasgow last year.

Scoring an impressive total of 3727 was Kate O'Connor from St Vincent's Dundalk, winner of the junior girls, with Niamh Kelly of St Leo's and Emma Cheshire of St Mary's also over the magic 3000-point total.

Annabelle Morris from St Vincent's Dundalk ran a strong 800m to take the senior girls' title from Amy McTaggart of Greenhills Drogheda.

Her total was 3078.

Class

Matthew Behan of CUS proved the class of the boys' senior event with the high point his time of 8.13 secs for the 60m hurdles.

He also picked up good points with his 23.3-second time for 200m and his 800m time of 2:11.46 and ended up with a total of 3368.

Also over 3000 points were the top three inter boys, led by Tim Bowler of St Mary's Enniscorthy whose consistency in all five disciplines was rewarded with a score of 3251.

His best points came in the hurdles, but he picked up solid points across the board.

In a closely-fought competition, Keith Marks of Ashbourne finished second on 3132, with Ryan Murray of St Mary's Enniscorthy third on 3053 points.

Winning the boys' junior title from the largest field of the day field was David Murphy of CBS Kilkenny.

He held off Alex Clarkin from Castleknock Community College and Ayomide Oke of Presentation Carlow.

Minor winners were Ruby Millet of Kilkenny College and Max Carey of Lucan Community College.
