'Your effort makes all the difference to those in need'
Conor O'Leary explains how running the marathon helps the Purple House Cancer Support charity deliver crucial services to patients and their families
Purple House Cancer Support was Ireland's first community-based cancer support centre and it celebrates its 25th anniversary this year. We provide a range of free cancer support services to over 2,500 people throughout the Leinster area each year.
The centre is at the heart of the community and is funded almost entirely by voluntary donations. It operates its busy range of support services from its location at Aubrey Court, Parnell Road, Bray, Co Wicklow.
The Vhi Women's Mini Marathon is a vital fundraising event for our organisation and is one of our biggest fundraisers.
Over the past 25 years we have had women taking part in the Women's Mini Marathon every year for us, it is a real feel-good event and a great chance for people to meet new friends.
Last year one of Purple House's clients, who had completed her cancer treatment in January, took part in the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon in aid of the centre.
"I wanted to give something back to the centre, so when the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon came about last year I was delighted with the opportunity to support them," she explains.
"The day was fantastic and the volunteers who helped on the day and looked after us were so good to us.
"It was amazing to see the crowds of women there, especially when we passed UCD and I could see the throngs of people all along the road in front of me. It really was a 'wow' moment.
"The bus organised by Purple House Cancer Support brought us back to the Martello Hotel in Bray where a lovely BBQ was organised for the participants and their families and friends. It was a lovely way to finish what had been a marvellous day."
Purple House would not be able to provide the level of services to people affected by cancer without the goodwill of people taking part in great events like the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon.
All funds raised go towards the provision of our vital cancer support services for both adults and children. A €10 donation will go towards providing a specialised counselling session for a child affected by cancer, a €25 donation will provide one hospital transport trip for a person receiving chemotherapy treatment and a €60 donation will provide one counselling session for a person affected by cancer.
For so many people to make the effort to run, jog or walk the Vhi Women's Mini Marathon's 10km, it means so much to us and our clients and we are very grateful to everyone who supports us.
