James McCarthy could be set for a surprise return from the knee injury that forced him out of the Leinster SFC final when Dublin begin their Super 8 campaign against Cork in Croke Park this evening (7.0).

McCarthy suffered the injury in the Leinster SFC final victory over Meath. And although fears of long-term damage were allayed, the player was initially expected to sit out at least the first round of Dublin's All-Ireland quarter-final group stage.

However, like Jonny Cooper - who hasn't played yet in this year's Championship with a foot injury - McCarthy's rehabilitation has accelerated in recent weeks and he could now take a spot on the bench for Jim Gavin's team as they begin their bid to win an unprecedented fifth All-Ireland title in a row.

Dublin are heavy favourites to beat a Cork team who they haven't played in the Championship since 2013 and whose latest All-Ireland semi-final appearance came in 2012.
