Kevin very proud to be a Cabra Colt

He holds fond memories of the legendary Gozzy

THE memories tumble back for Kevin O'Donovan.

He had magical times at his beloved Thomas Davis.

He played for the Dublin Junior football team. He had one special colleague.

The big Gozzy - Anthony Costello, a cherished Cabra folk hero.

"I have very fond memories of Gozzy. One of the nicest men you could hope to meet," recalls Kevin.

"We won the Leinster title with that Dublin team. It was a good side.

WONDERFUL

"There were some wonderful characters in the dressing-room, and Gozzy was in the middle of everything.

"We eventually lost to Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final. But we celebrated every game. Good days."

Kevin is now working in Gozzy's Kingdom, Naomh Fionnbarra.

"I am the GPO (Games Promotion Officer) here for the last four years. I'm really enjoying it. I have met such lovely people."

It's a busy gig. For a start, there's 19 juvenile teams.

Kevin praises the work of the coaches.

"We have 40 mentors working with the kids.

"They help to develop the skills and confidence."

He's a fan of the Go Games. It's the perfect arena for learning.

"The non-competitive games ensure that the skills are developed and that the games are enjoyed."

The young players don't have far to look for inspiration. Eamon Dillon has been doing very well for the Dublin senior hurlers.

And likewise, Siobhan Kehoe for Dublin's senior camogie team.

"Finbar's have been promoting the games and the culture for 70 years, and they have had much success and many Dublin representatives.

"2014 was a very positive year, and the link between the club and the local schools plays a huge role.

"The principals and the teachers in those schools help as much as they can in promoting the games and the club."

The top-class facilities are also a big asset.

And this year, Fionnbarra are fielding three adult teams in hurling and football, and two in camogie. Ladies football is also on the roll.
