Ted Veale produced a strong burst from the final fence to land the At The Races EBF Kilbegnet Novice Chase at Roscommon.

A winner on the Flat and over hurdles, the Tony Martin-trained seven-year-old had got off the mark over the bigger obstacles at Galway in August.

Sent off the even-money favourite, he was settled towards the rear by Barry Geraghty through the early stages of the two-mile Grade Three affair as The Black Russian took the six runners along, closely followed by Un Beau Roman.

The Black Russian held the narrowest of advantages over Un Beau Roman jumping the last, and while the latter got on top as they landed, Geraghty conjured a remarkable burst from Ted Veale, having seemingly been hard at work between the last two fences.

Swamping his rivals, the market leader had a cosy length and a quarter in hand over Un Beau Roman at the line.

Martin said: "Maybe he wasn't great at one down the back, but the man who rode him knows him, he knew what he was at, he got the best out of him and we got the right result in the end.

"It was a great pot to win and he has done us all proud. He is not the biggest in the world and he is probably not scopey enough to be top class over fences, but he has plenty of heart and that counts for a lot.

"He has his own way of doing things. He is not a soft ground horse. We thought last winter we might get decent ground at a few places, but he never really got it and it just didn't work out the way we planned.

"He has a lot of options and we will tip away and see if we can find something like that. He might not have enough class for Cheltenham."

Geraghty said: "We knew he had a great chance, but we knew it was a good competitive race and it turned out that way.

"In an ideal world coming off a faster pace might have helped, but I knew from the back of the second-last he was getting there."
